Coronation Meditation

Get into a comfortable position.  Relax, soften your eyelids.  Breathe deeply and naturally.  (Go through relaxation exercise)

Imagine that today is your Coronation.  You have been waiting for this moment all of your life.

In your mind’s eye, see yourself in small comfortable chamber.  An attendant is there with you.  The attendant helps you out of your clothing, and helps you put on a simple white linen garment and comfortable soft shoes made of the finest silken materials.  The attendant gestures to a door.  You go through the door, and find yourself in a large, lavishly appointed chamber.

The room is lit with many candles.  In the center of the room is a platform with steps leading up to a throne.   On one end of the room is an altar.  The altar is covered with a beautiful embroidered altar cloth, and has on it several glittering objects of coronation regalia.  Take in the altar.  See the beautiful objects in your mind’s eye.  Next to the altar stands an ancient sage dressed in fine garments.  When you look into his eyes, you see wisdom and understanding.  He beckons you to approach the altar.

The Oath

The ancient man says, “I am here at the bidding of my Goddess.  Dost thou agree to the test of sovereignty?”

You nod in reply.   In front of the altar is a richly cushioned bench.  The man gestures to you to kneel on the bench.  You kneel, and find it surprisingly comfortable.

The man asks you: “Art thou willing to take thy oath?”

You say, “I am willing.”

(in the stern tone of the sage)“Dost thou solemnly promise and swear here before the Goddess, to govern thine self according to thy true will and wisdom?

You say, “I do promise.”

(sage) “Wilt thou do everything possible to do what thy knowest is right, according to thy true will?

You say, “I will”

(sage)  Dost thou promise to serve others and be a guiding light to those who may be lost?”

You say, “I do promise”

(sage)  “Dost thou promise to dedicate thyself to thine own spirituality, and live according to the wheel of the year?”

You say, “I do promise that I will do all of these things.”

(sage)  “Please rise.”

You stand up, and hold yourself tall.

The Anointing

The ancient man holds up a vial of oil.

(use firmer tone in the voice of the Sage) “Great Goddess, Bless this holy oil, that it may sanctify thy subject, in preparation for service to thee.

Be thy hands anointed with holy oil”

He dips a finger in the oil, and takes your right hand in his, and uses the oil to draw an ancient symbol on your hand. (pause)

He dips a finger in the oil again, and draws the ancient symbol on your left hand.  (pause)

He repeats the process with a symbol on your heart,

(sage)“Be thy heart anointed with holy oil” (pause)

(sage) Be thy head anointed with holy oil,”

And he draws the symbol on your forehead. (pause)

(sage) “By all the ancient kings anointed before thee, be thou anointed, blessed and consecrated as sovereign, So Mote It Be.”

(Be sure everyone is done with their oil before proceeding)

 The Investiture

The sage then picks up one of the objects that are arranged on the altar.  It may be a pair of spurs, a gemstone such as rose quartz, or a tarot card such as Justice.

(use firmer tone in the voice of the Sage) “I present thee with this token of chivalry.  May it remind thee of the long succession of sovereigns who have dedicated their lives in service.  May it inspire thee to serve according to thy true will”

You hold the object in your hand, and admire its beauty.  You quietly contemplate your own personal oath of service.  (pause)

The man holds out his hand, and you return it to him, and he places it back on the altar.

He picks up another object.  This object might be a sword, or a carnelian stone, or the tarot card Strength, or some other object.

(Sage) “I now present thee with the token of strength and protection.  Receive now this holy relic of Kings.  May it help to remind thee of thy inner power, and inspire thee to courage when needed.   May it inspire thee to peace, while doing justice, supporting fairness and equality”

You take the object and admire its beauty, considering its meaning.  You contemplate your own personal oath of protection and strength.  (pause)

You hand the object back, and he places it on the altar.

Next, the sage picks up a pair of golden armbands.  You may experience these symbolically as a lapis lazuili stone or the tarot card The Hermit, or some other object.

(Sage)  “Take now the objects of sincerity and wisdom.  These tokens of the Goddess shall guide and strengthen thee.”

The sage takes a sumptuous cape made of rich materials, places it around your shoulders,

(Sage) “Receive this Imperial Robe, and may the Goddess clothe thee with the robe of righteousness.”

He picks up another object.  It may be a golden orb, or an amethyst stone, or tarot card The High Priestess, or some other object.

(Sage)  “Receive this glorious token of spirituality.  May it help thee to remember that thou carries within thee the spark of spirit, and may it inspire thee to kindle that spark into flame.”

He holds the object out to you, and you take it into your hands.  You gaze upon its marvelous beauty, and for a moment, you consider your own spiritual path.  (pause)

He holds out his hand, and you give the precious token of spirituality back to him, and he returns it to the altar.

He picks up an object that might be a precious ring, or a stone such as moonstone or tiger eye, or the tarot card The Hierophant, or some other object.  He presents it to you and says, “Now take this token of thy commitment to thy personal sovereignty.”

He then picks up another object of regalia.  This may be a scepter, a rod, a red jasper gemstone, or the tarot card The Emperor.

(sage)  “Here is the rod of justice and mercy.  With this object recognize the responsibility that accompanies thy power.  Hold thyself to the standard thou deemest appropriate to thy true Will.  As thou takes this token, grant thyself mercy and understanding, knowing thou art human, and that even as thou shall fall and fail, thou possesses the power to rise and overcome.”

He hands the object to you.  You hold it, marveling at its beauty, feeling its weight.  You contemplate its meaning.  (pause)

 The Crowning

(sage)  “These objects will remain here to remind thee of thy power.  Return to them whenever thou wishes to contemplate their meaning.  Now Kneel!”

 Once again, you kneel.

The man stands next to you, and picks up the final object on the altar.  It is a spectacular crown.  It glitters and gleams in the candlelight. It is encrusted with every type of precious stone.

 (sage)

“Oh Great Goddess, sanctify this crown of spirit and faith

And bless the head upon which it is placed

Fill thy charge with thy abundant grace

And grant access to the sovereignty that has been present since birth

So mote it be”

The wizened sage places the crown upon your head. He gestures you to rise.  Carefully, head high, the crown heavy upon your head, you rise.  He gestures toward the platform.  You turn, and walk slowly in procession to the platform, the crown upon your head.  You go up the steps of the platform, each step measured and deliberate, your robe trailing behind you.  When you reach the top, you turn.  You see the sage, watching you, and he nods.  You sit upon the throne.

A beautiful woman appears before you on the platform, She is glowing with an inner light.  She is wearing sumptuous robes, and golden jewelry.  She holds a golden goblet in her hand.  On the platform next to her is a shield and a spear.  She seems to have appeared from nowhere, and she looks upon you lovingly.  She speaks:

 The Homage (The Charge)

Hear now the words of the Sovereignty Goddess, known as Macha, Brighid, Aina, Rhiannon Arianhrod, Danu, Cailleach, Morrigan, Maeve, and many other names

I am the Goddess of Sovereignty who has been called by many names.  I am Mother Earth.  I am the Primordial Queen.  I am the ancient kingmaker.  I am she who carries the Shield of the White Mare

It is I who urges you to rise up and fight when the time for battle has come.  And it is I who demands that you seek out your will and champion your cause.

I am she who inspires you to discipline and resolve to achieve your true Will, and it is I who offers you drink and pleasure when the battle is done.

I am with you as you journey through life.  I am there as you face your many challenges.  You have been tested and tried, and each time you have proven yourself, again and again.

Your journey is far from ended.  There will be more battles to fight, and more challenging choices to make.  There will be more people who rely on your wisdom and skill.  You have been invested with the talismans of sovereignty.

Use wisely the tokens of strength, spirituality, discipline, service, wisdom, and commitment.  Know that your power has always been with you, it is your birthright.

I am Sovereignty, drink now from my cup so that you may rule

She hands you the golden goblet, and you drink deeply.

(Go through the phases of returning from the meditation)  Now, return to your body.  Go to each part of your body in turn, and come back to the here and now.  When you are ready, open your eyes

Thank the Deities and close the quarters

 Close the circle

The Circle is open, yet unbroken, Merry Meet, Merry part, until we meet again!

Regarding the oaths in the guided meditation:

The oaths in the ritual were intended to be open to interpretation.  A person could interpret them as acting according to a higher calling, or simple fulfilling one’s life desires.  When contemplating an oath to act according to one’s will, it’s suggested to explore the differences between Thelemic True Will, which is sovereign, and  “An it Harm none, do what thou Wilt”

2020 Summer Solstice Coronation Ritual: Gemstones Representing the Six Objects of Regalia

By Chasmodai

For the ritual I suggested using gemstones that represent six objects of regalia used in the British coronation liturgy, most recently used for Queen Elizabeth’s coronation on June 2, 1953. The six objects of regalia are:  Curtana, the Sword of Mercy, (circa 1610 – 1620,) the gold Sovereign’s Orb, (circa 1661) the Sovereign’s Sceptre and rod, (circa 1684,) the Armills, the Spurs, (circa 1661 with additions from 1820,) and the Sovereign’s Ring, (circa 1831.)  The six corresponding gemstones are: carnelian, amethyst, orbicular jasper, lapis lazuli, rose quartz, and white moonstone.

Carnelian, Representing the Curtana, the Sword of Mercy

The Sword represents the royal authority of the sovereign.  In the coronation liturgy, when the Sword is presented, the Archbishop specifically mentions “protection.”

Carnelian is said to help give courage and to help people who are timid become assertive and well-spoken. We might not physically fight others with weapons, but we can interpret the sword to mean that we are courageous when it’s time to stand up for justice for ourselves and others. Carnelian is a good stone to signify standing up to conflict rather than avoiding it, and doing so with powerful words rather than acts of aggression.

Carnelian can be found all over the world, including India, Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, Australia, China, Russia, USA, and Western Europe. It’s a type of chalcedony quartz, and ranges in color from light gold to peach or flesh, orange, red, to brown. It’s most famous for the blood-red-to-brownish-red varieties, for which the color, carnelian PMS 187, gets its name. Carnelian is also one of the official brand colors for Cornell University. Bright red and orange-red carnelian are in high demand, and red carnelian is higher in value. In India, brownish carnelian is placed in the sun to bring out the redder shades. Because hot wax does not stick to carnelian, it was used to make seals in ancient times. It is a translucent stone, and if you hold it up to bright light, you can see light through the stone. It has a vitreous, (glasslike) luster.

Carnelian is composed of silicone dioxide, and it get its color from iron oxide. Like other forms of chalcedony, it can form in sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous rock. The color develops in the stone as a result of exposure to heat. Its MOHS hardness is a seven, and a specific gravity of 2.82. It is classified as fibrous microcrystalline quartz.

In the ancient world, carnelian was the stone of kings. In Ancient Egypt, it was considered to be sunset captured in stone and was a symbol of life. It was also called the Blood of Isis. It was used to protect the living and to protect the dead as the soul traveled to the next world. The ancient Egyptians carved carnelian, red glass, or red jasper into an amulet called the Tjet or Tyet, also known as the knot of Isis. They also wore it to help resolve strong negative and acrimonious feelings.

Napoleon Bonaparte and Napoleon III believed that a particular carnelian seal would protect them in battle and according to legend, Napoleon III’s son, Prince Imperial Louis-Napoleon, lost the battle against the Zulus in 1879 because he didn’t believe in the power of the stone.

Carnelian is associated with the Goddess known as the Sacred Harlot – Lilith, Asherah, Aphrodite, and others. Use this stone for magick and spells when working with Her in this aspect. Red-orange carnelian is sometimes referred to as Blood of Isis, and can be used when working with Isis. It’s helpful for bringing in fertility and prosperity. Use it for invoking Bast, the Egyptian Goddess of childbirth Tawaret, Brigid, Isis, Mari, Vesta, or any Goddess of Fire, Childbirth, or Motherhood.

The magical properties of carnelian include protection, empowerment, motivation, peace, energy cleansing, abundance and prosperity, creativity, courage, logic, and clarity. It helps to improve drive and determination, power, and stamina. It helps people to overcome problems and champion causes. It is used to still storms and sends away lightning. It’s a great stone for those who wish to take charge of their personal power and destiny, and for those who wish to be more positive. It’s also known for protecting builders and construction workers from injuries caused by accidents. It’s known as the Singer’s Stone and helps singers for confidence onstage. It is helpful for balancing the sacral chakra, especially for people who place a great deal of their energy into spiritual work and neglect the first through the third chakras. Along with other deep-red stones, it’s also useful in love spells. Place a carnelian on your altar when celebrating Samhain. The tarot card, Justice, is represented by carnelian, although for the Summer Solstice ritual, Strength was suggested.

The healing properties of carnelian are said to include: curing shyness and quelling anger, relieve depression, increasing power and stamina, healing from trauma, releasing resentment, and helping with grieving, detoxifying the body, healing from addiction, healing arthritis, and rheumatism, treating the reproductive organs including low libido and staunching blood flow, particularly menstrual flow, reducing labor pains, as well as cleansing and purifying the blood and helping to heal open sores and kidney issues.

As a property and casualty insurance agent, I interact with the public over the phone, which can sometimes be difficult because many people do not understand basic insurance concepts. I personally keep a carnelian stone on my desk. When I am finding it challenging to communicate with a client, I pick up the carnelian and hold it in my hand, and focus on clear, confident, assertive communication. Sometimes I will hold the stone against my forehead as I focus on communicating with the client and keeping the discussion under control. I will also hold the stone in my hand when I am “asking for the sale.” As a sales agent, my main objective is to sell insurance, and often you have to ask for something in order to receive it. I also keep a collection of stones on my altar, including a carnelian. On the altar, the carnelian is intended to help give me courage and represents my role in protecting myself and others. Amethyst, Representing the gold Sovereign’s Orb

In the British coronation regalia the gold Sovereign’s Orb represents Christ’s dominion over the world.  For personal sovereignty, this can be interpreted as commitment to a personal spiritual path and seeking one’s own spiritual truth. There are many types of crystals and gemstones that are useful for spirituality. For example, rutilated quartz is said to help with spiritual awakening. But when it comes to a stone that represents spirituality, amethyst seems to be mentioned most often. Among other things, amethyst is useful for devotion, spiritual awakening, and for creating sacred space. Amethyst is not just popular with Witches and Pagans and people who love to meditate with crystals- it also has a long history of being used in churches and in religious jewelry due to its spiritual significance. In the Roman Catholic tradition, bishops wear an episcopal ring set with Amethyst. The Igreja de Sao Roque, a church in Lisbon that started as a shrine in 1505, is embellished with amethyst and other gemstones including lapis lazuli and agate. In the Holy Bible, in the Book of Exodus, Chapter 28, verse 19, amethyst is listed as one of the twelve stones to be set on the breastplate for Aaron the priest, representing the ninth tribe which was known as Asher.

Amethyst is a very common stone and is found on every continent. There are large producers in Brazil and Zambia. It is mined in several parts of North America, and different variations of amethyst can be found that are unique to their origin.

Amethyst is formed when silica crystals containing iron, titanium, aluminum, and manganese are exposed to naturally occurring gamma rays. It can lose its natural purple color when exposed to UV light or sunlight for long periods and can get its color back if exposed to x-rays. It has a MOHS hardness of seven, a specific gravity of 2.63 to 2.65, and a vitreous or glassy luster. It is classified as macro crystalline quartz, or just “quartz.” It can be transparent, translucent, or opaque.

According to Greek myth, the nymph Amethyst was spotted by a drunken Bacchus, as she was on her way to the temple of Artemis. Bacchus decided that he was going to rape her. As she ran from him, she cried out to Artemis, and she turned her into a clear crystal. Bacchus saw the stone, and poured his wine over her in remorse, turning her a deep shade of purple. Bacchus was immediately sobered, and as a result, people believed that amethyst would help with sobriety.

Amethyst is also said to be the stone of the Ascended Master Saint Germaine who is considered to be the Chohan of the seventh ray, based on the teachings of Theosophy. Chohan is a Tibetan word for Master or Lord, and Chohans are considered to be enlightened or more evolved beings. The seventh ray is said to carry the energy of the violet flame.

Magickally, amethyst can be used for charging moon water, opening the third eye and /or the crown chakra, enhancing dreams, and improving the sight for divination. It is good for eliminating bad or negative energy. It can protect against psychic attack. It helps in meditation for accessing higher truth and divine love. It’s often added to witchy jewelry, used as tips for wands, and used to make pendulums. Place an amethyst on the edge of your tub to help prepare yourself for ritual when taking a magickal bath, place one under your pillow for peaceful sleep and prophetic dreams, and keep one with your tarot cards or other divinization. Place it on your altar when celebrating Imbolc and Mabon. It is associated with the seventh (crown) chakra and the third eye. Use amethyst when invoking Artemis, Diana, Modron, Oya, Shekinah, Sophia Morgan le Fay, or any Maiden Goddess. The tarot card, Temperance, is represented by amethyst, however in our Summer Solstice ritual, The High Priestess was suggested.

The healing properties of amethyst are said to include helping with the discomfort of withdrawal, for becoming calmer, ceasing bad habits, easing homesickness, reducing feelings of shame, aiding sleep, and reducing headaches.

I keep amethyst on my altar to remind me of my devotion to the Goddess and my own personal spiritual path. As soon as I pick up an amethyst and hold it in my hand, I immediately feel calmer and more centered. I also keep an amethyst on my desk, because I find when my job becomes stressful, amethyst helps me keep my cool even when the people I am interacting with are exhibiting stress and anxiety.

Orbicular Jasper, representing the Sovereign’s Sceptre and Rod:

In the British coronation regalia, the Sovereign’s Scepter and rod represents justice, order, mercy and the rule of law. For the personal sovereignty project, this can be interpreted as a stone that represents exercising self-discipline and personal responsibility according to one’s own True Will. For this stone, I chose orbicular jasper, although labradorite, angelite or tourmaline might also be appropriate for this purpose. There are many different types of jasper. I prefer orbicular jasper, because I like the pleasing patterns in the stone, and because I believe that it best represents personal responsibility. Also, while red jasper is opaque and carnelian is translucent, they are both chalcedony stones with similar coloration, and orbicular jasper looks very different from carnelian. Since carnelian was already being used in the ritual, it made sense to use a form of jasper that doesn’t appear similar.

Jasper is mined all over the world, including Russia, India, Egypt, Australia, Brazil, and the U.S. It is a sedimentary stone and is formed when impurities are introduced as microcrystalline quartz is formed. This is what gives the stone its color and opacity. The MOHS hardness of Jasper is 6.5 to 7, and orbicular jasper has a specific gravity of 2.62 to 2.66. . It is opaque, and it can include many colors. Its luster can be a dull vitreous, (glassy) to greasy. It is classified as a grainy variety of microcrystalline quartz.

In Southwest Native American culture, red jasper is known as the Rain Bringer stone and may have been used in rainmaking ceremonies. It was the 12th stone in the Hebrew breastplate of Aaron. The ancient Egyptians used carved jasper stones to assist the dead in the afterlife. The Greeks and Romans believed it could protect against drowning and used it to drive away wild animals and demons.

Magickally, jasper is used for astral travel, and red jasper in particular is used for protection against the evil eye by sending negativity back to where it came from. It’s good for justice, preventing injuries from occurring, helping with grounding, increasing happiness, helping to remember one’s dreams, and increasing success, and victory. Ocean or orbicular jasper is used as protection against drowning. It’s an excellent stone to use for grounding after ritual, and its steady energy also increases the effectiveness of spells. Orbicular jasper is good for the solar plexus, heart, and throat chakras. Because it helps us to connect our feelings to our will, it helps us to combat apathy move forward with the necessary actions required to find personal happiness. Orbicular jasper can be used to invoke the Syrian Goddess Atargatis, and the Babylonian Goddess Tiamat, or any Earth Mother or Ocean Goddesses. Place jasper on your altar during Ostara rituals.  We used the tarot card The Emperor to represent jasper for our Summer Solstice ritual.

Jasper is said to be used for healing many ailments, including helping with grief and trauma, curing anxiety, increasing memory, treating low blood pressure, stopping bleeding, and protection from poison. It’s also said to be helpful with fertility, internal tissue regeneration, and digestive problems, reducing fevers, stopping epileptic seizures.

I keep jasper on my desk to remind me that my successes and failures are directly linked to my attitudes and my actions. I use the stone to help me stay grounded and remember that my hard work will help me succeed more than luck or a change in the behavior of others ever will. As crazy as it sounds, I will hold my orbicular jasper palm stone against my forehead whenever I feel that I need an “attitude adjustment.” I keep a jasper stone on my altar to help me remember my True Will and the personal responsibility that comes hand and hand with personal sovereignty.

Lapis Lazuli, Representing the Armills, or the Bracelets of Sincerity and Wisdom

During the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the Archbishop places the Armills on her wrists, saying “Receive the Bracelets of sincerity and wisdom. . .” These items of regalia also represent knighthood and military leadership.  Lapis lazuli is a good stone to represent sincerity and wisdom.  One might also use sodalite, which also represents wisdom and looks surprisingly like lapis lazuli. However, lapis lazuli is closely associated with royalty.  It contains sodalite in its composition.

Lapis lazuli is mainly mined in Afghanistan, but it also comes from Chile, Russia, Canada, Argentina, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, and the US.

A metamorphic stone, lapis lazuli forms when limestone, calcite, pyrites, lazurite, sodalite, dolomite, mica, diopside, and other minerals are heated by magma or mineral-rich water which was heated by geothermal energy, eventually cooling to become lapis lazuli. In order to be called lapis lazuli, the rock must be blue and contain at least 25% blue lazurite. White calcite is also present in lapis lazuli and can make the stone appear lighter blue in color. The MOHS hardness of lapis lazuli is 5 to 5.5, and the specific gravity is 2.5 to 3.0. It can be semi-translucent to opaque. The luster is waxy to vitreous. Since it is so soft, it’s not a very durable stone for jewelry, and historically it was ground into a powder for pigment.

According to legend, an angel gave King Solomon a lapis lazuli ring which gave him control over an army of demons to help him build his temple. The Sumerians believed that the Goddess Inanna measured the length of a person’s life with rods of lapis lazuli. They also believed that the stone carried the power of the Gods, and by wearing it, they could draw upon that power. It is believed to be the 5th stone on the breastplate of the priest Aaron. In the Bible, it was referred to as Sapir or Sapphire, but Sapphires were unknown before the Roman era. According to the theosophical society Summit Lighthouse, It represents the 1rst Ray, which is the Power of God, and the Wisdom Master or Chohan Master El Morya, who is said to also be one of the Three Wise Men present at the birth of Jesus.

Lapis lazuli is useful in magick for developing intuition, new ideas, concepts, activating the Third Eye Chakra, strengthening psychic abilities, cleansing negativity, accessing sacred knowledge, meditation, higher states of consciousness, past life work, and encouraging truth. It is useful for rituals of initiation and transformation. It represents sovereignty and stewardship. It is used for creating truth spells. It helps to encourage fidelity and communication between lovers. The ancient Romans believe that ingesting ground lapis lazuli could be used as an aphrodisiac and a cure for poison. It can be used for spells involving court appearances or justice. Like carnelian, it is also helpful for communication. It is also used for general healing spells. It can be used to invoke Aphrodite, Hathor, Hera, Ishtar, Isis, Ma’at, Nuit, the Egyptian Goddess of childbirth Tawaret, Ereshkigal, Enochian Goddess Babalon, the Roman Goddess Iustitia, Mother Mary, Shekinah, the Mesopotamian beer Goddess Siris, or any Queen of Heaven, Star Goddess, Great Mother, or Dark Goddess. Place it on your altar when celebrating Litha.  We used the tarot card The Hermit to represent lapis lazuli in our Summer Solstice ritual.

Its healing properties are said to include stress reduction, lowering blood pressure, increasing lifespan, strengthening eyesight, improved memory, and for curing insomnia, epilepsy, depression, fever, broken bones, migraines, headaches, anxiety, and vertigo.

I use lapis lazuli as a talisman on my desk as I work. It helps me to remember to employ all of my knowledge to make sound decisions both for myself and the recommendations that I make for others. It affirms my resolve to always do the right thing. When I think of wisdom and sincerity, I also think of learning, and this reminds me to always strive to learn more and become more expert in my field. On my altar, the lapis lazuli reminds me that the Goddess calls upon me to value the traits of sincerity and wisdom and to continue to recognize and appreciate those traits in others while cultivating them in myself.

Rose Quartz, Representing the Spurs:

One item of regalia used in the coronation of the British Sovereign is a pair of ornate spurs. They are made of gold and red velvet fabric with gold embroidery. They represent knighthood and chivalry, which can be interpreted as helping others, community service and social justice.  These are integral to personal sovereignty. Since community service and social justice begins with unconditional, universal love, and universal love is the energy that rose quartz is most associated with, rose quartz is a good stone for this purpose. Chalcedony is another stone that can be used to represent to represent knighthood and chivalry because it is a stone of generosity, goodwill, and brotherhood. However, when it comes to themes of service and social justice, rose quartz seems to be the most fitting.

Rose quartz is mined in Madagascar, South Africa, Namibia, USA, Germany, Sweden, India, Japan, and Brazil. Star rose quartz is mined in the USA in South Dakota and in Madagascar.

Rose quartz is an igneous rock which forms when magma cools and crystallizes. As it cools, it moves through rock and comes into contact with other substances. Many types of rock are created this way, including rose quartz. It’s unclear where rose quartz gets its color, but it’s believed to be trace elements incorporating in the crystal as it forms. Like amethyst, rose quartz is macrocrystalline quartz. Pink quartz, which is not the same thing as rose quartz, is rarer and can be distinguished from rose quartz because it forms visible crystals, whereas rose quartz does not. Pink quartz is said to get its color from aluminum and phosphorus. Pink quartz is sensitive to light, but rose quartz is not.

With a MOHS hardness of 7 and a specific gravity of 2.65, rose quartz tends to have a vitreous luster and is translucent. The Pantone color Rose Quartz, which was the Pantone Color of the Year in 2016, is the shade of pink that one most often associates with the stone.

According to myth, Cupid and Eros introduced rose quartz to humans to help encourage love. In another myth, the blood of Adonis, who was attacked by Ares in the form of a boar, and Aphrodite, his lover, combined and stained a white quartz stone pink. Zeus saved them, and said they could be together for six months each year. Rose quartz is associated with the 3rd ray, the Love of God, and the Chohan Master (aka Ascended Master) Paul the Venetian, according to the theosophical society Summit Lighthouse.

Magickally, rose quartz is used for reducing toxic blockages, opening the heart chakra, attracting love, and dream work. It’s associated with the heart chakra. To increase the power of a love spell, add rose quartz. Use rose quartz when attracting peace. It can be used when invoking Aphrodite, Blodeuwedd, Branwen, Hathor, and the Enochian Goddess Babalon, the Haitian Vodou Goddess Erzulie Freda, Eostre, Lilith, the Japanese Goddess of springtime, Sakuya-hime, or any Love Goddess, Mother Goddess, or Sacred Harlot. Place it on your altar when celebrating Ostara. The Tarot card, The Lovers, is represented by rose quartz, however in our ritual, we chose Justice, since the theme seemed more closely aligned with justice as it relates to social justice.

The healing properties of rose quartz are said to include: good for colic and feeding issues in babies, releasing stress, improving circulation, earache, addiction, acne, depression, leukemia, fertility, fibromyalgia, lung and heart problems, also brain issues and is good for palliative and hospice care for those who are dying,

Mother Theresa was once quoted as saying, “Work without love is slavery.” I keep a heart-shaped rose quartz palm stone on my desk to remind me of my commitment to serve others and to remember that it is a privilege to serve others. I also press it against my forehead during a call with a challenging client, to help me  activate empathy and compassion, and for a moment after disconnecting with the occasional abusive client, to help clear away negativity so that I can reset myself for the next call. On my altar, I use rose quartz to remind me that the one of the most powerful forces of the Goddess is the force of Love.

White Moonstone, Representing the Sovereign’s Ring:

The final stone used in the personal sovereignty coronation ritual is moonstone, signifying the Sovereign’s Ring in the coronation regalia. The Ring of State represents marriage to the state and symbolizes the regent’s commitment to her people. One might say it is a marriage to her people. However, in the personal sovereignty ritual, the commitment is to one’s own success and happiness – to care for one’s self and look out for one’s self. It is important to balance commitment to self with the other commitments: strength and protection, spirituality, one’s True Will, wisdom and sincerity, community service and social justice. Another stone that might be appropriate for this purpose is garnet, or possibly tiger eye.

Moonstones are exported from Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Tanzania, Austria, US, Finland, Norway, Mexico, India, and Madagascar, among other places.

Moonstone is an orthoclase feldspar stone, which is composed of calcium and sodium with potassium aluminum silicate. Moonstone may appear to be a type of quartz, but it is not. Quartz differs from feldspar in that quartz is that feldspar has a harder MOHS hardness, and it has a different atomic structure. The crystals also form differently with feldspar being closer to a square rather than six-sided like quartz. The MOHS hardness of moonstone is 6 – 6.5, and the specific gravity is 2.56 to 2.60. It’s harder than lapis lazuli, but it’s fragile because it has two cleavage directions. This makes it more prone to breakage, including breakage caused by temperature changes. Its luster is nonmetallic vitreous, and it can be semi-translucent to semi-transparent. But what makes Moonstone stand apart is something called adularescence. This is caused by the way the Moonstone forms. The orthoclase and the albite, which are two different types of feldspar separates into thin, alternating layers, which is what gives it that appearance because the two types of feldspar refract light differently. This effect can remind one of the ways that opals diffract light. The effect is not the same as an opal, but when you look deeply into a moonstone and turn it against the light, you may see an occasional flash or shimmer. When choosing moonstone, it’s important to distinguish between moonstone and rainbow moonstone. Rainbow moonstone is a plagioclase feldspar, which is also known as white labradorite, and moonstone is orthoclase feldspar. They are formed differently and have different uses. Rainbow moonstone is beautiful and also has a layered structure within the stone. Moonstone exists in many colors, most notably peach or white but also many other colors. White moonstone is a good choice to signify self-marriage.

The Hindus and the ancient Romans believed that the moonstone was made of moonbeams. A moonstone was said to be embedded in the forehead of Ganesh. As you tilt a moonstone, it can appear as if the moon is shining through clouds due to the adularescence. The Romans believed that the moonstone represents the Goddess Diana.

Magickally, moonstone can be used for prophesy and clairvoyance, and protection during travel, especially over water. Place a moonstone in your mouth during a full moon to see into the future. Use it to attract luck and increase confidence. Bury a moonstone in your garden for a successful harvest. Use moonstone to help you ground after ritual. It can be used for the sacral, third eye, and crown chakras. It is used for bringing love to the individual, and for resolving quarrels between lovers. Exchange moonstones with your partner to strengthen your relationship. Moonstone can be used to invoke Arianrhod, Artemis, Atabey, the Chinese Lunar Goddess Changxi, Diana, Isis, Mahina, Mari, Mary Magdalene, Morgan le Fay, The Morrigan, Rhiannon, Selene, Tanit, or to represent the Triple Goddess or any Lunar Goddess. The tarot card, The Moon, is represented by moonstone, however for our ritual, we used the card, The Hierophant, representing commitment as it relates to commitment to the self.  Because of its associations with the moon, it’s another stone that is often found in Wiccan and Pagan jewelry.

For healing properties, it is said to be good for any health issue of the liver, pancreas, stomach or spleen, lymphatic system, balancing emotions, circadian rhythms, menstrual issues, childbirth, or obesity.

In my office, I keep a moonstone on my desk because it’s important to balance one’s own commitment to one’s self and one’s career against the needs of the client and the company that I work for. The moonstone helps me remember to be kind and true to myself, and I find that when I am true to myself, I am in better shape to provide service to others. On my altar, the moonstone represents the aspect of sovereignty that one must love and be committed to one’s self before we can do that for anyone else.
